30/11, 20.00: Eindhoven – RBC

November 30th, 2009

This odd is way too high, and is mostly based on the totals in Eindhoven-matches. Most of the time, Eindhoven will go attack in the blind. Most of the time this causes a lot of goals, either in their advantage or in the advantage of their rivals. However, I don’t expect a game like this tonight. RBC plays tight as hell, will leave the initiative to Eindhoven and will try to make some dangerous counters.

As coach Coolen said, RBC plays worse when facing lower ranked teams. I expect a comparable match with Fortuna Sittard – RBC (0-0) and Eindhoven – RBC (0-1) last year. The odd is too high, so we pick the u3. Medium stakes however, as a RBC-match can explode in the last 15 minutes.

20/11, 19.30: Excelsior v De Graafschap

November 20th, 2009

Sorry for the late write-up, but I have been thinking over and over about this match. Due to a lack of time only a short write-up. The essence is: De Graafschap is one of the teams going for the title and after 16 matches they are on a shared 2nd spot, only one point behind leader Go Ahead Eagles. For Jupiler League standard, they have an excellent squad with a lot of experience in the Dutch Eredivisie, like Powell, Volmer, Rose, Terol and Muslu.

Excelsior is a sort of satellite of Feyenoord. Young players not ready to play for Feyenoord can obtain some experience by being loaned out to Excelsior. Therefore, Excelsior has a young squad with some talented guys. This means that Excelsior can beat anyone, as they proved when they beat Cambuur in an awaymatch two weeks ago (1-2), but can also lose from everyone (like last week, at home against AGOVV, 0-1).

Normally, we wouldn’t pick Excelsior despite the juicy odd of 2.81 (moneyline, Canbet), but this time the situation is different. De Graafschap is not in great form, regarding their 1-1 draw at home against FC Den Bosch (who were reduced to 10 when the equaliser was conceded by De Graafschap). Moreover, they suffer from lots of injuries. Important players like Muslu, Volmer, Terol (GK), Meerdink, Van Beukering and Wormgoor are out, as well as El Hassnaoui and Chaiat. Attackers Powell and Bargas are doubtful.

Normally, we are not impressed by an injury or two, but this time it’s different. Almost all of the players missing are important quality players, and this is a massive blow for coach Kalezic. Therefore, the odds for Excelsior certainly reflect value. To decrease the risk as far as possible, we play them +0.25 at an odd of 1.8 (one should also consider the DNB option at 2.09) at 10bet, medium stakes.

21/11, 19.45: NAC Breda v NEC Nijmegen

November 20th, 2009

Another edition of the infamous ‘Avondje NAC’, which means as much as ‘the NAC-evening’. The term refers to the typical fanexperience at the Rat Verlegh-stadium when NAC plays it’s home matches at night. Crowded stands, good atmosphere, passionate football and a lack of daylight are the basic prerequisites of such an evening, the home win and gallons of beer add up to the joy. Beforehand, this season’s edition of NAC Breda v NEC Nijmegen seems like an 110% pure ‘Avondje NAC’.

NAC is doing really well so far, with a 6th place on the table. Moral is high at the Breda ‘Rats’, especially because the local rivals Willem II were shredded to peaces in the derby two weeks ago (4-0). Coach Robert Maaskant has built a team that combines young and old, creative players with decent defenders, and has extra weapons with Matthew Amoah and Leonardo.

NEC on the other hand sucks donkeyballs. The good years under the reign of Mario Been are definitely over. Former coach Dwight Lodeweges decided to quit the club, and with Wim Rip, a complete nobody as interim, the bottom club RKC beat NEC at their own Goffert (0-1), a miserable result. A new coach has been signed, and it is former Sparta, Roda JC and FC Den Bosch coach Wiljan Vloet. He is know for putting much priority to things like organisation, discipline and effort.

As he was signed up only this week, we think his arrival did not have a lot of impact already. This compared with the high moral at NAC makes us lean towards picking NAC to beat NEC. Because of the advantage in quality, we are sure to play them. The fact that NAC is missing midfielders De Graaf and Gilissen does not change our mind, as good replacements are available.

As we are pretty confident, we play NAC with -1 asian handicap, 5/10 @ 2.23 (10bet). Good luck!

18/11, 20.45: Holland v Paraguay

November 15th, 2009

Second international match in a few days for Holland, when Paraguay will come to visit the Abe Lenstra Stadium in Heerenveen. Contrary to yesterday’s match against Italy, we are pretty confident that Holland can get a victory here. There’s a huge difference in perspective, compared to the match in Pescara.

First, the opponent is not of world class. Paraguay is one of the stronger teams in South America, which resulted in qualification for the WC2010 finishing third in the group (behind Brazil and Chile, but above Uruguay and Argentina). They sealed qualification with a home victory over Argentina (1-0). The last two matches were less convincing, beating low class Venezuela 1-2 and losing at home against Colombia (0-2). This weekend, the team of Gerardo Martino suffered a 2-0 defeat against Qatar in Rouen (France). Their star player Roque Santa Cruz is back in the squad after a year of injury worries. Holland has a big advantage in quality.

Second, Holland plays at home. In home matches, Holland has been very strong, winning al four matches with a clean sheet. This match will be the first ever international match played in Heerenveen, but this will not harm the atmosphere. The place will be crowded, with a typically-Heerenveen positive vibe. When Holland plays at home, usually opponents feel that little is possible within minutes of the first half. Paraguay does not have the quality to break the home winning streak.

Third, Holland approaches the match in a different way. When playing Italy, coach Van Marwijk approached this match very serious, which was reflected in the tactics. Defensive organisation first, attacking was of minor importance. Before the match in Pescara, Van Marwijk would have been content with a draw, but now he’s asking for a convincing win, period. Despite the injuries of Van Persie and Robben, there’s enough quality left to shred the Paraguay defense to pieces.

Conclusion: the odd of 1.67 at Unibet is too high. There’s some nice value in it, as for the above reasons we didn’t expect the odd the odd to be above 1.55. Therefore, we play it with large stakes. Other lean was Holland -1 around 2.6, but there’s enough to grab with the moneyline odd.

14/11, 20.50: Italy v Holland

November 13th, 2009

Friendly match here. Holland and Italy, both already placed for the WC2010, line up for a friendly match in the Stadio Adriatico in Pescara. In our opinion, this is a hard match to bet on. Holland has a great record in the WCQ, with 24 points out of 8 matches. Though regularly criticised in dutch press, the defense was rock solid with only two goals conceded. However, the question remains what the real strength is of this team. The opponents Norway, Scotland, Macedonia and Iceland clearly are not the international football elite.

The last international top opponent match Holland played was a friendly in Amsterdam against England. This match showed that Holland has a hard time facing international top class teams. Despite leading with 2-0, Holland seemed happy with a 2-2 draw. The Dutch goals originated from mistakes in the English defense, while the defense had severe problems with Carlton Cole and Jermain Defoe. After the match, manager Van Marwijk said he learnt a lot new in this match.

Italy, of course, is of international class. The reigning world champions ended top of their group, leaving among others, Ireland and Bulgaria behind them. None of the 10 matches was lost. This friendly, manager Lippi wil try some new players like Davide Biondini, Parma midfielder Daniele Galloppa and Livorno midfielder Antonio Candreva. Key players like Vincenzo Iaquinta, Gennaro Gattuso, Daniele De Rossi and Claudio Marchisio are out for the match.

Coach Lippi wil use this match for trying the new guys. He has 30 candidates for the 23-man squad for South-Africa, and everyone gets his chance. On the other hand, Van Marwijk is not so keen on experiments. He works with a familiar group of players, and only in case of injuries, new players are called in. In this case, it will be Wout Brama of Twente Enschede replacing Demy de Zeeuw (Ajax) in midfield. Arjen Robben was withdrawn from the squad, because of the odd injury.

Should we have to pick something, it would be the under 2 with an odd of 2.14 (12bet). Sounds pretty strange, but Holland will pretty much play from its organisation and solid defence, denying the Italians to score. As Lippi will try some players and rotate with them, Italy will not be at full strength. Holland will be all too happy with a draw, eventhough it is a friendly. The last friendly, in Australia, ended 0-0. However, as it is friendly football and as Holland and Italy are no experts in friendly international matches, small stakes are advised.

13/11, 20.00: Emmen v Fortuna

November 11th, 2009

Both teams are at the bottom of the table, but Emmen is showing signs of improvement. Last week, they were beaten by topdogs De Graafschap, but before, they beat Excelsior and FC Oss. Fortuna on the other hand has huge problems. They miraculously avoided bankruptcy last summer, but have to fear relegation this year. With FC Eindhoven, they are the weakest side of the Jupiler League, and their performances have been bad lately. We expect Emmen to continue their improving mood, and 2.10 is a very decent odd. We play it medium stakes at StanJames
.
